On March 15, 2023, the California Public Utilities Commission enacted a new rate structure which
reduced export rates on new solar systems installed in California. These rate changes caused solar to be less appealing to prospective consumers; but there is a silver lining. Under NEM 3.0, the ROI of installing
solar + storage vs. solar only is roughly the same length of time. In the past, installing batteries attached to your solar system has not been the best way to boost the efficiency of your system. batteries would only be discharged in the event of an outage, being useless the rest of the time while the grid is up. The technology was just not there yet. Now, we have the ability to seamlessly switch from solar power, battery power, and grid power automatically based on the current rates at any part of the day allowing you to purchase power from the grid when rates are the cheapest and sell back your excess production or dump your stored battery power when the energy rates benefit you to do so.

If we do have a power outage for whatever the reason and the grid is down, back feeding power that you and every other home with excess solar production can become a hazard to utility workers working on the lines.
